Dancing with the Spirit: Youth Music and Dance Camps

Last spring, Dancing with the Spirit traveled to 14 villages to host music week. Music week is an opportunity for community youth and elders to come together to play music, dance and connect. This year they focused even more on culture and language along with music with 12 fluent Gwich’in speakers as instructors.

In late July and early August, 11 Gwich'in youth from the villages, six fluent Gwich'in speakers, and two staff people attended the Midway Music Festival in the Northwest Territories of Canada. This past fall the group visited Circle, Kaltag, Ruby, Point Hope, and Yakutat with three more villages on the agenda for December. After the first of the new year, the group will visit more villages including Sandpoint. Currently, Dancing with the Spirit’s board is working toward setting up an endowment fund.
